Letter to the Editor (The Brewton Standard)

Dear Editor,

Kudos to District 4 County Commissioner Brandon Smith for throwing his hat in the ring for the 2012 county elections, and for demonstrating enthusiasm and respect for the democratic process.

I think other politicians would do well to follow his example and actually feel that it's an "honor to serve". Witness the recent statement by Mitt Romney, where he criticized Rick Santorum for being a "career politician". If Romney finds public office to be an essentially dishonorable profession, then why is he even running in the first place? To him and his breed, perhaps "serving the people" is just a means to an end, or a necessary evil of some kind.

Serving as an effective politician is grueling (and at times thankless) work, and requires intense dedication and sacrifice. There is nothing vile or dishonorable about this work when it is approached with integrity.

Perhaps Romney has spent too long living the swanky corporate life to see this basic reality.
